Remote viewing performance is especially more responsive. About 6 months ago I grabbed an intel NUC and set it up as the plex server that points to the media on my NAS and performance is so much better and more responsive-the processor is more competent and has better hardware transcoding support. I was running my plex server on my ds1019+ and the performance was less than stellar, even with local playback.
However, I would have suggested an alternative if you were otherwise fine with your 218play-get an intel NUC (a tiny computer box) for plex.
If you go the docker path, you should set it up so that you can back up and restore if something goes awry with your NAS, so you don't have to re-do your whole library again. I preferred the ds version because I didn't have issues with it in general, and it's easier to troubleshoot things (actually I never had to) when it's more-simply configured vs. I always ran the ds app for plex, but others swear by the docker container.
